Artists Statement: My artwork delves into Nicaragua's political turmoil and my struggle to find a new sense of peace in a war-free environment. I dive into these memories tainted by the emotional toll of events since 2018. When confronted with such a monumental challenge as a shift in the political landscape, my community and I felt adrift and powerless. Amidst widespread anger and violence leading to the loss of lives, I experienced a profound sense of emotional disorientation, which I aim to convey through my artwork.
Nicaragua underwent drastic changes under Daniel Ortega's regime, morphing into a Sandinista stronghold. Schools closed, the press silenced, and rebels faced dire consequences, both inside and outside the country. The fear of speaking out cast a shadow over personal safety and familial well-being. As a result, my memories morphed, turning once-happy moments into haunting recollections filled with anger and sorrow.
These memories persisted as I distanced myself from my community, shaping my daily experiences. I juxtapose the contrasting realities and privileges between Nicaragua and the United States, using my art as a lens to examine these disparities.
My artistic evolution reflects my changing thought processes, transitioning towards sculpture and large-scale projects. Despite the passage of time allowing for reflection, I still mourn the loss of cherished memories. The essence of my artistic journey stems from my profound love for my country, its people, and its culture. The sudden upheaval of these foundational aspects has left me grappling with grief, which I express through my artwork as a testament to my personal growth.
